Posting Ruleset
Last updated: November 7, 2026
Introduction
Capturing detailed rules to help facilitate the management of adjustment codes is critical to monitor payments and adjustments from payers and patients. While postings are always created on the claim as shown in the ERA, the posting ruleset allows the practice to configure which adjustments require further scrutiny and how the adjustments affect the claim balance. The posting ruleset should be regularly revisited to minimize manual work and to ensure the existing posting rules are still relevant.
FAQ
Q: Do I have to customize each individual code?
A: No. Posting rules can be as generic as an entire adjustment group or as specific as an adjustment code.
Q: Do you have a recommended rule set that I can use to get started?
A: Canvas is shipped out with preset adjustment groups. Users can add posting rules on top of these preset adjustment groups to be more specific to their practice’s workflow. You can review an example ruleset here.

Exceptions to Posting Ruleset
The following exceptions can occur regardless of the posting ruleset for the adjustment codes on the claim.
A task is created when a remit states "Claim not found" - (i.e. A remit comes in with a claim that we do not have record of in Canvas.)
A task is created when a remit states "Payer not found" - (i.e. A remit comes in and we have record of the claim but not the payer associated with the claim.)
When a remit comes back with a new line item that the claim did not originally have, a posting will be created with the line item and the claim will be moved to the ADJUDICATED queue. - (i.e. A payer writes off two CPT codes, adds a third CPT code and pays that one instead.)
